JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS #1-22 (Kelly Thompson/Sophie Campbell)

JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS Get A Comic Book Series That Is Truly Outrageous!

It’s Showtime (Synergy) At IDW Publishing

San Diego, CA (December 2, 2014) – IDW Publishing is excited to expand its long relationship with Hasbro and welcome JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS to the world of comic books. Starting in March 2015, Jem and company will star in their first ongoing series! The creative team bringing this world full of fashion, art, action, and style to life is writer Kelly Thompson (Storykiller, The Girl Who Would Be King) and artist Ross Campbell (Glory, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), with subscription covers by Sara Richard (My Little Pony, Kitty and Dino).

It’s the 21st century, and Jem and The Holograms are 21st century girls! Meet Jerrica Benton, the gifted singer of The Holograms, a band that has the right look and the right sound… But one thing is holding them back—Jerrica’s crippling stage fright. Luckily, Jerrica is about to find help in the most unlikely of places when she discovers a forgotten present left by her father. And what she finds is truly outrageous!

“As a kid I was a huge fan of the original 80’s JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS cartoon and so the chance to breathe new life into it for a savvy modern audience, not to mention to work with Ross, an artist practically destined to draw this book, is really a dream come true,” said series writer, Kelly Thompson.

Don’t miss the chance to get the five stunning rainbow foil covers that will be available for Issue One—one for each Hologram by artist Amy Mebberson (My Little Pony, Pocket Princesses), plus the whole band by series artist Ross Campbell—in a deluxe rainbow foil and hologram collectible box. A second box set for Issue two will feature another set of four covers by Mebberson and a group shot by Campbell—this time starring Jem’s greatest nemeses, The Misfits!

“Getting a JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS comic going was a top priority for me when I started at IDW,” says Senior Editor John Barber. “It took three years, but Kelly and Ross came in with a style and attitude that really got Jem. They understand Jem’s appeal—I can’t overstate the impact Jem has had on generations of fans and readers.”

The beloved animated show JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS debuted on television in 1985, alongside a very successful toyline by Hasbro. The show was geared towards young females but was unlike any “girls show” before as it featured a strong female lead and mixed elements of science fiction, adventure, and romance.

Hasbro announced earlier this year that a live-action, motion-picture adaptation of JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS from Universal Pictures starring Aubrey Peeples and directed by Jon M. Chu is slated for release October 2015.
INTERVIEW DE L’ÉQUIPE CRÉATIVE
This is something Kelly and I talked about a lot. We talked about how Jem and the Holograms could be a bit of a critique on how in pop music (and everywhere, really) female artists are held to a narrow standard of beauty, I can’t even think of any super popular pop star female musicians who don’t in some way fit that mold. No matter how great or talented someone is, they’ll never reach those heights of fame unless they look like Beyoncé (not to slam Beyoncé because she is great!).

So we thought what if that was Jerrica’s thing, and in order to succeed in that world she creates an idealized alternate identity with which she can meet the impossible super sexualized pop star standards, as well as cut loose on a personal level, much like Peter Parker cuts loose when he’s Spider-Man. The self-confidence aspect is kind of messed up, which it’s meant to be. Ideally, Jerrica would be confident as herself and that would be the end of it.

Unfortunately, things aren’t that simple. To achieve confidence, she uses Synergy to help her, but then it’s kind of a false confidence. Even though Jem is an extension of her, it’s not really "her.” I think I said to Kelly in the beginning that Jerrica’s decision to do that is like a sane response to an insane world.
INTERVIEW DE KELLY THOMPSON ET ROSS CAMPBELL
Ah, The Misfits. The yin to The Holograms’ yang. What good are great protagonists without fantastic antagonists? I don’t love calling The Misfits villains because I think they are a bit more complex than villains sometimes get credit for being, but I’m a huge believer in the whole idea of your hero only being as good as your villain, and The Misfits make for great complicated villains, especially Pizzazz.

What’s so great about The Misfits is that even though they’re kind of awful, you can really see why Jem and The Holograms get to them. The Misfits are a talented and hardworking band, and Jem and The Holograms kind of come out of nowhere and are instantly beloved. They’re a bit softer and more pop than The Misfits and thus more mainstream and accessible. They’re also really good people and they win the day every time. It really would drive you mad to watch them constantly win while you constantly lose –– it’s like all the best kind of classic superhero/supervillain dichotomies actually.
INTERVIEW DE LA SCÉNARISTE KELLY THOMPSON

L’artiste Ross Campbell a révélé le 7 mars qu’il était transgenre et qu’elle désirait donc être appelée Sophie Campbell dorénavant.
Deep breath okay here goes. Time to stop hiding, now’s the time. I’m transgender and have been transitioning for the past year.

I’ve been on hormones for a bit so i figured now is the time before i’m too emotional from a second puberty. This is why i haven’t been doing conventions anymore and probably won’t for the foreseeable future. Still a long way to go but i finally feel like i have some kind of a future instead of an abyss of misery.

Let’s hope i’m not committing career suicide here. lol

aww, everyone is so nice and supportive!! i have the best editors and colleagues and bosses.

In a little bit comes the hardest part yet. Coming out to my PARENTS.

I have the best mom ;o;. I feel so dumb thinking my mom would flip out. -__-
My mom was totally cool and supportive, and she says she wasn’t really surprised at all. Having my mom’s support is so huge that i almost don’t really care what my dad will say. XD
I think Silica is a kind of story element that you almost have to address if your concept includes a powerful AI as “Jem and The Holograms” does. There have to be ramifications to something as powerful as Synergy, especially using it in a, let’s be honest, mostly selfish capacity. Jem and The Holograms’ intentions are not bad ones, or ones that are intended to ever hurt anyone, but you don’t get anything for nothing in this life – everything comes with a price.

Silica is the first real look at a price for having Synergy in their lives and it’s going to force them to confront some painful truths and really lean on their strong bonds of sisterhood in order to make it through. From a story and character perspective, Silica is fantastic because she pushed on all our characters in amazing ways – especially Jerrica, and the crutch that Jem/Synergy is becoming for her – how reliant she is on it as a device to live her life. But Silica effects everyone and really pushes them toward self-examination. None of our main characters will escape Silica unscathed.
