MOON KNIGHT #7-12 (Brian Wood / Smallwood, Bellaire

Le premier volume de Moon Knight se conclura avec le 6ème numéro de la série. Warren Ellis et Declan Shalvey, le duo à l’origine de la relance du titre, seront remplacés, dès septembre, par le scénariste Brian Wood (The Massive, X-Men) et le dessinateur Greg Smallwood (Dream Thief). Jordie Bellaire reste en place durant la transition comme coloriste attitrée de la série.

Brian Wood a déclaré qu’il gardera la structure d’une histoire par numéro, et tentera de conserver l’approche minimaliste des scénarios de son prédécesseur. La première histoire se déroulera pendant un blackout, ce qui donnera beaucoup de fil à retordre au protecteur des voyageurs de la nuit.

Une déclaration très alléchante, écrire des scénarios consistants me paraît être une approche très surfaite.

J’ai lu hier le TPB reprenant les épisodes de Brian Wood, et j’ai pris une méchante claque.
J’avais savouré les épisodes de Warren Ellis, plein d’idées et de cynisme, avec un très maigre fil rouge et des parti pris esthétiques radicaux. Bref, pas mal de choses pour me convaincre.
J’ai donc pris le deuxième TPB avec une certaine confiance. Alors déjà, les dessins de Smallwood sont épatants. Une espèce d’épure presque cartoony qui le place dans la vaste famille des Alex Toth d’énième génération comme Samnee. Moins emballant que Samnee, mais quand même impressionnant. Son trait granuleux génère des effets incroyables.
Ensuite, le survol rapide apporte la preuve que la narration cherche la trouvaille, l’astuce. L’épisode 8, presque entièrement constitué d’écrans de caméra, est une belle prouesse. La séance de psy est également remplie d’utilisations ingénieuses du langage BD.
Enfin, l’histoire est vachement chouette. Le fil rouge est beaucoup plus présent que dans les épisodes d’Ellis, et Wood reprend pas mal d’idées posées par son prédécesseurs, ainsi que des personnages qui trouvent à cette occasion une plus grande épaisseur. Et tout le discours politique sur les apparences de la guerre, sur les causes des conflits et sur les motivations des engagements est assez percutant.
Bref, un sacré morceau.
Je vais lire les Cullen Bunn (j’imagine que ça sera moins fort, mais je reste confiant, j’aime bien ce qu’il fait), et je me dis qu’avec Lemire qui arrive, Moon Knight a rarement été aussi bien servi.

Moi je suis « déçu » par la fin du run car ça casse une petite partie de MK que j’aimais bien introduit par Ellis. Mais c’est clairement du haut niveau. J’ai hâte de lire celui de Bunn aussi.

Après des années d’essais et d’errances, Marvel, qui n’a cessé de soutenir son titre, semble avoir trouvé déjà la bonne formule et ensuite les bons auteurs pour son personnage.
