With DC hero Mr. Terrific set to appear in this summer’s Superman movie, played by Edi Gathegi, it’s no surprise that DC is turning its attention to the long-running character once again with a new solo comic.
Mr. Terrific: Year One is a new six-issue limited series from writer Al Letson, artist Valentine De Landro (with additional art by Edwin Galmon), colorist Marissa Louise, and letterer Lucas Gattoni. Although some parts of the new series will take place in the present, the majority of the comic appears to turn the clock back to the beginning of Michael Holt’s career as a hero, and particularly his tragic origin story which will be « dramatically revisited and expanded, » according to DC.
« A genius-level inventor and Olympic champion, Michael Holt’s life was destined for greatness, » reads the official synopsis. « But that life came to a screeching halt when his wife, Paula, and unborn son were killed in a car accident. Pas mal. Al Letson surfe sur le statut d’un Mr Terrific en charge de la JLU et qui enquête sur l’impact de la mort de Darkseid, avec une projection sur sa propre existence pour voir ce qui change. L’on voit ainsi des années avant, et deux ans après la mort de sa femme enceinte, un Michael Holt qui ne sort jamais de chez lui, parle à une IA et est visité par un ami Dre qui le critique pour avoir vendu l’entreprise Holt à Athena, businesswoman sans scrupule qui mène des expériences qui empoisonnent Gateway City. Dre et une équipe volent des données à Athena mais se font voir, Dre appelle Michael à l’aide qui vient avec sa technologie… mais Dre se fait tirer dessus par un sniper !
C’est bien. Le scénario est en soi classique mais efficace, avec un Michael brisé mais qui va se remettre pour aider un ami et venger l’entreprise qu’il tenait avec sa femme. C’est efficace et fluide, avec des dessins au présent corrects de Edwin Galmon et de très belles atmosphères au passé par Valentine de Landro.
Classique mais efficace.
Très sympa à suivre.
Dans le traitement, on est loin du MT mûr de Tom King (dans Strange Adventures). La période du personnage est aussi différente.
Je garde aussi un bon souvenir de de Landro sur son Mister Miracle.

Bien fait en soi, mais assez scolaire et quelques rajouts pertinents dans la continuité actuelle mais qui m’emballent peu. Al Letson montre ainsi un Mr Terrific qui enquête sur son passé pour comprendre le présent, en croisant un Chien d’Apokolips figé en téléportation qu’il bloque et stoppe. Dans le passé, Michael s’échappe après que Dre soit tué et il envisage de se jeter d’un pont, désespéré. Il est visité par le Spectre, qui sent que l’univers pourrait changer selon sa décision. Ça se bagarre moralement entre les deux, et Michael explique son passé avec Dre et Jefferson Pierce puis sa relation avec Paula, plus intelligente que lui qui a travaillé sur le super projet repris par celle qui a racheté l’entreprise. Paula l’a abandonné en tombant enceinte, Michael a poursuivi pour aider mais elle a vu le potentiel de destruction, et cela a créé une distance juste avant l’accident de voiture. Le Spectre fait parler Jim Corrigan qui évoque les rapprochements entre Michael et Terry Sloane, et Michael réfléchit puis se réactive. Alors que Athena, qui a repris l’entreprise, exige que l’on retrouve le chauffeur de Dre, on apprend qu’elle est soumise à Darkseid. Michael a un échange froid avec Jefferson Pierce à l’enterrement de Dre, puis va mener sa propre lutte avec un embryon de costume…
C’est efficace mais sans grosse surprise. Le Spectre est un invité bien vu mais ça amène un gros dialogue à l’ancienne, qui fonctionne mais sans emballer pleinement. Surtout, lier Mr Terrific à Darkseid, je comprends l’intérêt avec la période All In mais c’est bof bof ici. Edwin Galmon illustre solidement au présent, et Valentine de Landro propose de bien bons dessins adaptés dans le passé.
Solide mais sans m’emballer.

Sans surprise, sans grand intérêt mais efficace. Al Letson continue son exploration du passé de Michael Holt, qui se lance dans la vérification de ses soupçons sur Athena avec sa première sortie en proto costume et un affrontement très difficile avec Cormorant, tandis qu’il gère des flux cosmiques déviants dans le présent.
Bon, c’est correct en soi mais pas révolutionnaire. Ça muscle l’origine de Mr Terrific mais sans être indispensable, alors que les dessins de Edwin Galmon sont moyens au présent mais ceux de Valentine De Landro sont charmants au passé.
Dispensable mais efficace.
Je suis très déçu de la série. Je commence à penser que certains personnages n’auront jamais le succès au sein d’une série solo.
A mon grand regret car j’adore littéralement ce personnage au cerveau terrifiant.
Quand tu remontes, je compte le lancement New 52. Une cata qui se termine sur Terre-2. Dans JSA, il a sa légitimité. Dans les Terrifics, aussi. Lemire l’avait bien choyé. Dans Strange Adventures, Tom King pond un Terrific exceptionnel, je n’ai pas peur des mots, en Sherlock Homes se challenge en permanence.
Là, t’as le film de l’été et DC ne met pas un petit billet sur la table pour le rendre sexy. Franchement…

Gros bof. Al Letson montre une avancée cosmique de Mr Terrific au présent face à des Parademons, alors qu’on voit l’échec de sa première sortie dans le passé et une fuite difficile. Cormorant est viré pour son échec, Athena Prescott sent la pression de Darkseid, et Bruce Wayne collabore avec Michael pour trouver une solution aux radiations de l’engin mais Athena se fait transformer par ses scientifiques.
Gros bof, oui. Le scénario est basique et peu intéressant, le lien avec Darkseid est abusif, et l’ensemble patine. La gestion de Bruce est cool mais le numéro est poussif, avec des dessins moyens de Edwin Galmon et jolis de Valentine de Landro.
Un gâchis.
Evidemment.

Maybe super-heroics are best left to those with superpowers and science best left to the scientists. At least, that’s what Michael Holt tries to tell his old friend Jefferson Pierce — Black Lightning himself — as Athena Prescott’s reign of terror grows into something altogether otherworldly… and threatens to bring Gateway City to its knees.
Meanwhile, in the present, Mr. Terrific desperately searches for a way home, lest he remain trapped in the Palace of Eternity with a mysterious enemy who wants him dead!
Poussif. Al Letson avance poussivement son intrigue au présent, en liant les événements avec le Palace of Eternity vu dans le Flash de Jeremy Adams, et en rappelant le fils de Mr Terrific croisé là-bas ; galère. Alors que dans le passé, Athena Prescott se remet et s’emporte contre ses collaborateurs, alors que Black Lightning vient remotiver Michael. Ils raisonnent sur leurs fonctions, et collaborent pour stopper la centrale menaçante, mais Athena court toujours.
C’est poussif, c’est long, c’est peu intéressant. L’intrigue au présent se perd dans du cosmique avec trop peu d’espace pour cela, et l’intrigue au passé est juste basique et sans grand élan. Edwin Galmon gère les dessins du présent, alors que Valentine De Landro illustre joliment le passé.
Un gâchis de dessins et de pages pour une intrigue si poussive.

Bonne bagarre de fin, mais des explications et projections lourdes au présent. Al Letson gère bien la conclusion au passé avec Michael qui s’assume en héros et assure contre Athena Prescott transformée par le générateur de sa femme décédée, et influencée par Darkseid et Granny Goodness. Il fonctionne bien en duo avec Black Lightning et s’associe à la JSA mais, au présent, sa voix-off qui finalement explique son origine à son fils Jeffrey pris du ventre de sa femme par Granny, c’est lourd et maladroit, comme le retour piteux de Athena et son recrutement par Mercy Graves.
Bonne bagarre donc mais grosses lourdeurs après. La mini-série reste bien ratée car l’origine précisée ici est capillotractée et bien abusivement liée à Darkseid, sans apport réel et avec un propos au présent bien lourd. Valentine de Landro assure aux dessins du passé et Edwin Galmon dessine solidement mais sans plaisir au présent.
Une fin moyenne d’une mini-série ratée.
