Sympathique, intéressant, mais sans plus. Dynamite ramène encore Thunderbolt pour une petite mini-série, avec ici Fred Van Lente qui montre un Peter Cannon qui a grandi et s’est formé dans un quartier résidentiel sécurisé géré par une secte dont les membres se sont suicidés mystérieusement. Il en émerge en plein contrôle de son corps et de son esprit, tabasse des extrémistes américains anti-gouvernements, et vient solliciter l’aide d’une amie d’enfance qui a fui la secte, parce qu’il veut la convaincre que le gourou a tué tout le monde, mais… à la soirée où ils sont, un autre Peter Cannon est présenté officiellement !
C’est pas mal, en fait. Fred Van Lente abandonne en apparence l’origine de l’Himalaya et troque cela pour un entraînement en isolation complète, avec secte affiliée et mystères autour de tout ça. Pourquoi pas, ça peut permettre de donner un certain cachet à l’ensemble, mais les rebondissements restent plan-plan et les dessins de Jonathan Lau sont jolis mais froids et n’ont pas évolué depuis dix ans.

Plutôt prenant et intéressant, bien qu’un peu confus. Fred Van Lente enchaîne ainsi, avec « le vrai » Peter Cannon, qui s’est élevé et formé seul dans le manoir parental où un gourou avait bloqué une secte qui est morte il y a des années, confronte un « faux » Peter Cannon, qui s’avère être The Hooded One, alias Count Abbot, le fameux gourou qui avait manipulé la secte et manipule désormais la ville en se faisant passer pour Peter. Bagarre entre eux, le vrai Peter s’est inspiré de ses techniques mais le faux se défend et bloque « le coup de la mort », ce qui surprend Peter. Ce dernier s’enfuie avec son amie d’enfance, et ils sont attaqués par des ninjas dans un train avant de rentrer au manoir… où le faux Peter, dans son apparence de Peter, les attaque !
C’est plutôt prenant, oui, mais le jeu du vrai / faux est un peu troublant, et la révélation est un peu rapide voire grossière. L’ensemble reste en outre assez flou, notamment sur le plan de The Hooded One, ainsi que sur la façon dont il a tenu le rôle de Peter jusque-là. Après, la relation entre le vrai Peter et son amie d’enfance est très cool et agréable, les bagarres sont bonnes, Peter est sympa’, et Jonathan Lau a un style dynamique et quelques belles images.

Gros bof. Fred Van Lente sa saga (voire sa série ?) avec une grosse bagarre plutôt mal fichue, où l’on voit des flashbacks révélant comment le gourou a tué jadis sa secte et comment la mère de Peter l’a sauvé. Le gourou se dit supérieur à celui qui s’est entraîné seul selon ses préceptes, et veut le prouver en tuant l’amie d’enfance de Peter. Ce dernier craque, ramène la fille à la vie avec une sorte de poing Iron Fist et bat l’ennemi. Il reprend ensuite sa place dans la vie que le gourou lui avait prise, en voulant changer sa société et le monde.
Gros bof, oui. C’est sans surprise, sans grand intérêt. C’est fait grossièrement, les dessins de Jonathan Lau sont précipités et vides, et je n’ai aucune idée de ce qui peut suivre, sans m’y intéresser.
