Resurrection Man, le personnage créé par Dan Abnett, Andy Lanning et Butch Guice, sera de retour en avril dans une mini-série signée par les auteurs de Blue in Green, le scénariste Ram V et le dessinateur Anand RK.
In this new series, “After living and dying his latest life, Shelley awakes with a new purpose to go along with his latest power: saving the universe,” according to DC’s news release. “This version of Resurrection Man must battle across time and space against a sadistic Word War II internment camp captain who has inherited a twisted version of Shelley’s abilities. As the lines of cosmic order begin to blur, Mitch Shelley will literally die to save the universe, more than once.”
“This is a story I’ve wanted to tell since I first started writing for DC,” V said in the news release. “It’s lingered and stayed and got its hooks into my mind, and my love and excitement for the character and story has only grown. Part of the joy of writing comics, for me, is getting to reinvent, reimagine characters in a way that speaks to my own preoccupations and joys; with Resurrection Man: Quantum Karma , I hope readers will share in my excitement as Anand, [colorist Mike Spicer] and [letterer Aditya Bidikar] and I tell a story of endless lifetimes, saving universes and falling in love, spanning the length of all existence.”

Bon, c’est joli, intriguant et lent. Ram V commence doucement sa saga, avec une enfant qui lit de vieux comics sur Resurrection Man alors que son grand-père agonise dans une chambre proche. L’homme se lève la nuit après les au revoirs à ses proches, meurt dans le jardin… et renaît, car il est Mitch Selley qui a ici eu une mort naturelle après avoir eu une famille. Il est interpellé par une entité cosmique qui l’emmène dans une dimension métaphysique, et révèle être un autre Mitch d’un autre Univers. Ce 2e Mitch, le premier à avoir été ici, interpelle le Mitch revenu à la vie car « le pire » arrive, la Mort de tout ce qui vit, de toute information. Ils plongent dans leur passé, quand Mitch était prisonnier de la 2e guerre mondiale de Japonais dirigés par un chef cruel, violent, cannibale et sadique. Alors que l’annonce de la mort de Hitler leur arrivent, lui et sa cour dévorent les organes de Mitch, qui renaît avec des pouvoirs (car Hitler ne tient plus la Lance du Destin qui annulait les super-pouvoirs) et détruit le camp. Mais le lendemain, des secours trouvent le corps décharné mais vivant du commandant…
Bon, c’est lent mais intriguant. Ram V pose bien les éléments, les principes, l’approche du personnage et de ses capacités. La présentation de l’ennemi est incomplète, peu originale mais efficace car glaçante. Ça reste fluide bien que fort lent, mais heureusement très bien dessiné par Anand RK qui livre des planches cosmiques et métaphysiques, mais très lisibles et jolies. Butch Guice dessine une belle page d’introduction.
