RUMBLE #1-15 (John Arcudi / James Harren)

Image Comics Press Release

Co-creators John Arcudi (writer of BPRD, Savage Wolverine, A god Somewhere and the Eisner nominated The Creep) and comics rock-star James Harren (Artist on Conan, BPRD, and cover artist for the Hawkeye vs. Deadpool mini series) have come together on a project that is both quite literally of epic proportions and completely “street-level-human” in its themes in RUMBLE. Both bizarre as hell and familiar as life, the new ongoing series comes to Image Comics in December of 2014.

And RUMBLE is a strange book, that’s for sure—like a scarecrow-Conan fighting in a Louis C.K. TV show directed by David Fincher—with a supporting cast of odd characters, many of whom aren’t even human.

“I’d been developing the ideas for Rumble for some time, but it wasn’t until James and I started talking about it that it really came together, that it all started to make sense,” said Arcudi. “That’s when the potential was realized in a way that really freakin’ excited me! You look at his work and you know he’s going to bring explosive ferocity to the big action, and all the moodiness that the weirder elements are going to require. He’s cutting loose on Rumble in ways that will surprise even his fans. It couldn’t be a better team!”

“The history of modern comics is bedazzled by great collaborations, and John Arcudi and James Harren are definitely part of that great tradition,” said Eric Stephenson, Publisher at Image Comics. “I’ve admire both their work for a long time now, and I cannot tell you how excited I am to have them here at Image. Forget everything you’ve seen from them before: Rumble sets a new standard for this awesome creative team!”

RUMBLE is a bizarre action/adventure urban-fantasy horror story—with a dash of humor at times. Coming to Image Comics this December.

The series has a few core characters, and the one everybody seems to be interested in is Rathraq, scarecrow warrior God — well, that last part might be stretching it. He’s seen better days, and he’s just not willing to let go of those old times. He thinks he’s just as tough as he used to be and he acts that way. The modern city he’s arrived in, that’s seen better days, too — and it’s the collision of the old times, Rahtraq’s old world, and the modern (but far from “new”) world of this half-sleeping urban urban decay that creates a lot of tension. Bartender Bobby LaRosa is stuck in this crappy city but, of course, a sword swinging scarecrow makes it decidedly crappier. And when Rathraq’s old world colleagues start showing up, it’s even worse! I don’t know, trying to break it down, it seems to sound simpler than it really will be in the book, but it’s the relationships between these two and all the other characters that really fills things out.

The first five issues will establish this world, an array of characters human and otherwise — and the tone of the series. It’s such a big world with so many directions to go in, it’s the kind of thing I love to do — and I hope I do it well.
Okay, so a scarecrow walks into a bar…and proceeds to wreak havoc across two worlds! After a long absence, Rathraq, Scarecrow Warrior God, is back-and very unhappy. Bad news for his old enemies, yes, but worse news for everybody else! JOHN ARCUDI and JAMES HARREN bring you a modern day action/adventure fantasy thriller where rundown dive bars, undead kitty cats, psycho skinheads, and giant mummies all play a part. It’s Louis C.K. meets Robert E. Howard in a David Fincher universe.

Rathraq is an angry kinda guy, if you can call a living sack of hay a “guy." And he’s one of those guys who has a list. He’s out to right some wrongs — that’s how he sees it, anyway. Bobby’s a bartender who wants the good life but can’t quite get there. In other words, a regular guy who has to deal with all this weird crap — and he’d really rather not.

His pal Del, on the other hand, is super into it. A die-hard skinhead who thinks of himself as a real badass, but maybe he isn’t — or maybe he is. We’ll see. Also, Timah Golshiri is a grad student who has a background in academia that turns out to be helpful to Bobby and Del. Still, she needs to find a better class of friends.
Last week, Bobby LaRosa was miserable-miserable with his dead-end job, his callous ex-girlfriend, and his lazy, loser skinhead buddy. This week, it’s all sword-swinging scarecrows, guts-dripping demons, a giant bog mummy, and six headed monsters! Right now, last week’s not looking too bad. You get some answers, more questions, and a whole lot of crazy in the second issue of RUMBLE.
