A travers la campagne « What is the Key ? » l’éditeur Dynamite Entertainment annonce l’arrivée des personnages « Gold Key » Turok, Doctor Spektor, Solar, et Magnus dans son catalogue. De 2009 à 2011, les propriétés Gold Key étaient publiées par Dark Horse sous l’égide du responsable Jim Shooter qui préféra la sureté d’un éditeur bien établi plutôt que de relancer Valiant comme il s’y était engagé.
La publication en « canon » des nouvelles séries « Gold Key », réalisées par des auteurs « éclectiques » de la bande dessinée américaine, ressemble fortement à la politique établie avec succès en 2012 par Valiant, ex-détenteur des droits de Gold Key dans les années 90.
La série « Solar: Man of the Atom » débutera en avril avec Joe Bennett au dessin. Ci-dessous, les couvertures du premier numéro réalisées par** Juan Doe**, Garry Brown, Roberto Castro, Stephen Mooney, Ken Haeser, et Bob Layton:

Ah j’aime bien Joe Bennett, c’est plein de patate et assez joli, sans être esbroufe.
Toi, t’as jamais lu Doctor Solar.
Je me souviens d’un épisode qui m’avait traumatisé, gamin. C’était dans la vieille série de Gold Key, et ça devait figurer dans le sommaire d’un Titi Poche ou quelque chose d’avoisinant chez Sagédition.
Donc, Solar, dans son identité civile de savant atomiste en blouse, passe une journée peinard à remuer des éprouvettes avec son équipe, dont une accorte scientifique, blonde me semble-t-il. Or, voilà-t-y pas qu’un androïde au corps fait d’une sorte de pâte à modeler enlève la jolie blonde afin de prendre sa place dans le laboratoire où l’équipe remue des éprouvettes, et d’espionner ces joyeux savants sans doute détenteurs d’un secret dont j’ai oublié les subtilités depuis le temps. Le truc méga troublant, c’est que l’androïde a une forme masculine assez charpentée, au début de l’épisode, mais avec des traits lisses de créature artificielle. Et pour prendre la place de l’accorte blonde, il utilise des photographies comme références et commence à se refaire le visage (et le reste, mais ça, c’est hors champ) en se sculptant le nez à coup de scalpel. Et, copeau par copeau, qui tombent à ses pieds, il se retaille le nez et les traits du visage pour ressembler à l’accorte blonde.
Bon, certes, il ne trompera pas Doctor Solar pendant tout l’épisode, le héros atomique se rend compte de la supercherie (et l’androïde, ou gynoïde, l’affronte avec une force décuplée), mais tout de même, ce personnage d’espion que l’on identifie comme masculin, qui s’infiltre sous une forme féminine après une séance d’auto-chirurgie esthétique procédant par découpe et élagage (la femme, c’est comme l’homme, mais avec des morceaux en moins…), ça met particulièrement mal à l’aise, l’air de rien.
Petite série très inégale, la version Gold Key, mais qui contenait quelques idées un peu barrées, faut dire !
Le scénariste Frank Barbiere a confirmé que Solar ne sera pas seul « Man of the Atom » mais qu’il sera accompagné d’une « Woman of the Atom ». Voici les couvertures du troisième numéro réalisées par Juan Doe, Ema Lupacchino, et Jonathan Case:

Elle est pas mal, cette petite série. Ça prend un peu son temps, mais en même temps la caractérisation des personnages est sympa, l’enchaînement des péripéties est bien, les combats sont musclés, les subplots sont intéressants. La fin du quatrième épisode, par exemple, promet des développements inattendus (Barbiere a lancé un personnage dans une direction, et là, il laisse entendre que va aller dans une autre…).
Le seul reproche que je ferai, c’est que Joe Bennett ne tient pas le rythme. Dommage, parce que j’aime beaucoup son style énergique. Et les pages des remplaçants ne sont pas toujours à niveau. Certaines sont très bien au demeurant, mais ça casse le rythme.
Je crois que c’est la première série de Frank Barbiere que je lis, je n’ai pas souvenir d’avoir lu un truc de lui précédemment. Et je trouve qu’il gère bien son truc. La spécificité du (des) héros lui permet de trouver des astuces rigolotes dans la gestion de la voix off (notons qu’il assure aussi le lettrage), ce qui fait qu’il sort de la sempiternelle voix off. Plutôt bien joué.
Bref, pas mal de mystères, des tas de trucs à éclairer et à résoudre, mais dans l’ensemble, c’est plutôt prenant. Rien de génial, mais lecture très agréable.
Ça tombe bien, c’est ma prochaine lecture (en attendant d’avoir assez de numéros de Spektor). J’avais lu le premier arc de Turok, je viens de finir celui de Robot Fighter. j’ai une nette préférence pour la première série, moins jolie mais plus rythmée. Dès le départ, on sent que Pak en a sous le pied, qu’il va s’amuser à établir différentes cultures et leur associer différentes espèces tout en faisant évoluer son héros solitaire juste assez atypique pour être intéressant. Ça sent le voyage à plein nez, avec une réinterprétation du Monde du XVIIIème version Jurassic. Ça se lit bien, très bien même (à part pour le coté graphique qui permet difficilement de distinguer Turok de ses semblables).
Je suis moins transporté par Robot Fighter. D’un coté, Van Lente développe efficacement le monde qui entoure Magnus, de l’autre, il fait du surplace pendant quatre numéros. C’est déjà un poil plus convenu (voir le suspense pesant concernant le « réveil » du héros). Par contre, c’est déjà plus intéressant à regarder, avec de vrais jeux sur les capacités de Magnus (sous forme d’informations données aux lecteurs).
