En novembre, l’éditeur Image Comics publiera le premier numéro-double de Tooth & Claw, une nouvelle série d’Heroic-fantasy anthropomorphe supervisée par le scénariste Kurt Busiek (Astro City) et le dessinateur Ben Dewey.

Le lecteur suivra Dunstan, un jeune Bull Terrier qui rêve de devenir magicien comme son père, et l’unique humain et grand champion Dusty dans leur mystérieuse quête où ils rencontreront, sur leur chemin, la magicienne phacochère Gartha, Goodfoot le coyote, le peuple Bison, les Sep-Cicatrices ou encore Lord Talon.

Busiek en héroic-fantasy, ça ne m’a jamais tellement impressionné. Mais là, il a un dessinateur… impressionnant, justement !

J’ai vu passer son nom une ou deux fois. C’était sur du Star Wars et du Savage Sword of Conan si je me rappelle bien…

Le premier numéro de Tooth and Claw aura droit à un second tirage et changera officiellement de titre pour l’occasion. La série sera désormais intitulée « The Autumnlands : Tooth and claw », les auteurs et l’éditeur s’étant rendu compte un peu tard que le précédent titre avait déjà été déposé…pour une mini-série publiée chez Image !

Kamandi is definitely an influence — it started out with me wanting to write Kamandi, and DC never actually letting me, until I realized that doing Kamandi in the shadow of its original run is a thankless task anyway, and maybe I’d be better off creating something new that had aspects of what I like about Kamandi without it being Kamandi. The other big initial influence was that I read Jack Vance’s Tales of the Dying Earth, and loved the texture and atmosphere of that world. Lu le premier recueil qui compile les épisodes 1 à 6 de Autumnlands…et là, je me rends compte que la suite n’est toujours pas sortie. Ce titre a pris pas mal de retard…et quand on voit le travail impressionnant de Ben Dewey, ça ne m’étonne pas.
C’est un dessinateur dont je découvre les planches et elles m’ont sacrément flatté les mirettes : des villes aériennes aux étendues vertes et sauvages, les décors sont minutieusement soignés, complexes et détaillés sans être surchargés; les personnages sont fouillés, expressifs, d’une grande diversité et de toute beauté et le tout est magnifié par le superbe travail de colorisation de Jordie Bellaire. Ca en jette, un sacré beau bouquin…
Au croisement de plusieurs influences, le monde créé par Kurt Busiek et son dessinateur est passionnant à découvrir et révèle de nombreuses surprises.
La narration ne manque pas de bonnes idées, les rebondissements sont nombreux, l’action est épique et les événements montent en puissance jusqu’à un final palpitant.
Une grande aventure qui mêle avec talent fantasy et S.F…vivement la suite…s’il y en a une, bien sûr…

Ajoute aussi le fait que Kurt Busiek à eu quelques ennuis de santé l’année dernière et en début d’année. C’est ce qu’il m’avait dit en tout cas.

Et il n’est pas le seul, malheureusement. En quelques années on a eu Peter David, Keith Giffen, Greg Capullo, Warren Ellis, entre autres, tous les mêmes problèmes du palpitant.

Les temps sont durs chez les éditeurs.
