When I pitched my idea for the series, I intentionally went way dark, figuring they’d either tell me to scale it back, or give me a polite pat on the head and tell me to go away," Swierczynski says. "To my happy surprise, Alex and the gang embraced the darkness.

I think a lot of people meant that things were all instantly going to be dark and gritty. It’s not that way at all. These aren’t going to be kids books. They’re very much in the same ballpark of Marvel, DC or Image – though, ideally, different and better. We don’t want this to feel like they’re the same old books. The goal is to not only feel different from the competitors, but also have each of these books feel different from each other. « Black Hood » is going to be a pretty gritty noir book, which is very much in my wheelhouse outside of comics. « The Shield » is more of an action 'punch ‹ em up › with some espionage and the dark underbelly of the government thrown in there. And « The Fox » is the creators doing the same crazy stuff they did in the first one. It reminds me in a way of a lot of classic Spider-Man stuff, where they’re throwing everything and the kitchen sink at the hero, and he’s bouncing off and continuing to do his best. This is a story of him and how he handles those pressures, and it’s a lot of fun.

In the first issue, we watched Greg plunge into a free fall, only to bounce up a little at the end. Well, as readers will see in The Black Hood #2 , that little bounce was only a tree limb, and there’s a long way to go before he reaches rock bottom. My favorite thing about noir stories is that you never really know when you’ve reached the absolute nadir. The universe has a funny way of pulling the earth out from under you when you least expect it…

Après avoir réalisé quelques couvertures pour la série, le dessinateur Howard Chaykin se chargera d’illustrer le 6ème numéro de la série The Black Hood .
« We knew we wanted to take a beat after the events of ‘The Bullet’s Kiss’ - and to give readers a good jumping-on point before we dive into the next dose of Duane and [regular series artist Michael] Gaydos, » Dark Circle Comics line editor Alex Segura told CBR. « With that in mind, we thought it’d be neat to have someone else step in for an issue to bring Duane’s story to life. It’s no secret that I’ve loved Howard Chaykin’s amazing run of variant covers on the first five issues of the series – along with so much of his work over the years, from 'American Flagg! to ‹ Sattelite Sam. › Thankfully, Howard said yes. He really amps up the noir on a book that was already brimming with darkness and menace, and his presence elevates this issue to a very special status. »
