"Within the various historic Hulk runs, the biggest influence on the tone will be Immortal Hulk , by far. That series made a ton of sense to me and felt much more in keeping with Hulk’s original horror-themed influences. I want Hulk to be legitimately scary, and no one should be more scared of him [than] Banner himself, so Immortal Hulk is a huge inspiration.
As far as Hulk’s voice, I love the Greg Pak run. I feel like Hulk should hardly speak at all, and when he does speak, it should be as few words as possible and with maximum impact.
Outside of Hulk comics, probably the biggest influences on this series are Neil Gaiman’s American Gods and Mike Mignola’s Hellboy. I love all the folklore and mythology in both those books, and I love the blue-collar, good-guy-monster as the vehicle to explore them all. Because of Hellboy’s very nature, he finds himself walking in and out of these amazing stories, facing threats to which the rest of us are blind. Hulk is our window into Marvel’s world of monsters. I want to celebrate some great ones that have been forgotten and create a whole lot of new ones."
