WOLVERINE #1-12 (Paul Cornell / Ryan Stegman)

The first arc is called « Payback, » and that’s where we find him: working for a crime boss called The Offer, alongside a « family » of low-rent super villains. Following the end of « Killable, » he’s decided to simplify his life and drop his responsibilities.

He’s now wearing an armor which keeps the shape of his old uniform, but it has, worryingly for readers who’ve been paying attention, samurai influences, too. [And] He’s now carrying a pair of handguns, and fighting hand-to-hand in a different way. He will indeed be using the claws less frequently.

There are so many comics that inspire me. Sometimes I will go through phases for a week or two where I have to stop looking at comics because I get so inspired that it’s almost detrimental to my work. All of a sudden I will want to do something like my inspirations rather than just being myself.

Specifically for Wolverine I have always been inspired by how Joe Madureira drew him and how Marc Silvestri drew him. I’m trying very hard to do my own thing with the book, but it’s hard because the way those guys draw him is now in my DNA. So I’m sure fans will see it seeping through at times. But I think there’s still plenty of me in there too.

The story that Paul and Ryan are telling is truly is Logan as you’ve never seen him before. The gun he’s holding on the cover [to issue #1] is just the first clue. What they’re building to is truly epic. We’re so confident of what’s in store in issue #12, that we’ve even set up an exchangeability program: Retailers that send back two unsold copies of « Wolverine » #1 will qualify for a special « Mortal Variant » of issue #12, which is going to be a double-sized monster of an issue.

A strand or two. Look, when we announce a « Mortal Variant, » we’re well aware the bells and whistles that might set off. All I’ll say is, 2014 is going to be a huge year for Wolverine. Everyone will be talking about him.

T’as qu’à croire, Axel.

Mort artistique ? Pas la dernière…
