Après avoir raconté l’épopée du hip-hop dans Hip Hop Family Tree, le scénariste et dessinateur Ed Piskor se propose d’examiner l’héritage des X-Men, dont il a condensé la longue et compliquée histoire dans la mini-série en 6 épisodes X-Men : Grand Design, qui est présentée comme une « célébration du passé, du présent et du futur » de la célèbre équipe.
Les 6 couvertures ont été dévoilées au San Diego Comic Con. D’après le communiqué officiel, la publication débutera cet automne :

Je ne savais rien du scénariste et dessinateur Ed Piskor, spécialisé dans la BD indépendante, et auteur notamment des quatre tomes de Hip Hop Family Tree, une rétrospective sur la naissance et l’évolution du genre musical. Attiré par de bonnes critiques, j’ai plongé dans son X-Men : Grand Design #1… et j’ai été bluffé.
Dans cette mini-série en six épisodes, l’artiste se propose tout simplement de compiler, synthétiser, ordonner, classer et reconstruire l’ensemble de l’Histoire des X-Men… rien que ça !
En reprenant directement à la base, à savoir l’apparition des premiers mutants, les troubles liés à Namor dans les années 40, la naissance puis l’enfance puis l’adolescence de Xavier, ses rencontres avec Caïn Marko, le Roi d’Ombre, et les destins croisés de Magnus, Jean Grey, puis encore la création des premiers X-Men et les conditions de leur recrutement, Ed Piskor réalise un extraordinaire travail d’historien, extrêmement complet, extrêmement cohérent, extrêmement clair !
Il s’agit, déjà, d’un exploit extraordinaire, doublé en plus d’une réussite réelle dans la narration, dans le dessin (le style old school/indé’ ne plaira pas à tous, mais j’adore), dans le rythme de son histoire, dans la gestion des personnalités et des caractères ; c’est juste parfait.
Fan depuis longtemps des X-Men, j’ai retrouvé ici ce que j’ai aimé chez ces personnages. Ce récit historique, superbe travail complet et enfin cohérent, est une déclaration d’amour aux X-Men, en plus d’être une vraie bonne histoire, bien racontée et passionnante.

Pour info, le processus est en fait identique aux hip hop family tree, sauf que là c’est fictif, en format VO c’est présenté comment ? en issue classique ?

Ed Piskor : « Every two issues is like a mini-arc, and every two issues becomes a book. These issues will come out in December and January, with a trade in April. Wash-rinse-repeat for three year. It takes me about six months to do an issue, doing two pages a week. And that’s a seven-day-a-week schedule. This is bigger than a standard monthly comic. It’s a more intense project. You’re not gonna wanna miss it, but good comics take time. I don’t have to let anything pass my desk that I don’t completely approve of or that I’m not happy with. I’m creating this with intense specification on my part. »

Sur son compte twitter, Ed Piskor a annoncé qu’il a terminé les crayonnés de la deuxième partie de X-Men : Grand Design (les #3 et 4). Pour la future édition reliée, il re-colorisera également Giant-Size X-Men #1.
