X-O MANOWAR #1-3 (Matt Kindt / Tomas Giorello)

Hier est sorti, aux États-Unis, le 50ème et dernier numéro de X-O Manowar, série qui marqua la renaissance de l’éditeur Valiant Entertainement en mai 2012.

Or, suite au combat final entre Aric de Dacie et les Tourmenteurs - combat raconté par le scénariste Robert Venditti et une pléiade d’artistes - le numéro se ferme sur un court récit qui à tout pour retenir l’attention des fans de Valiant.

Sur un monde extra-terrestre, dans un futur proche, le lecteur retrouve un certain héros, vraisemblablement devenu conquérant et ayant pris gout au bain de sang, le cul niché sur un trône avec la mention « Retour en 2017 » voir l’extrait ci-dessous].

Si la participation de Matt Kindt et Tomas Giorello semble indiquer que les deux auteurs seront à la tête d’une nouvelle série X-O Manowar l’année prochaine, rappelons aussi que le scénariste est le seul, à l’heure actuelle, à écrire une série qui se déroule exclusivement dans le futur de l’univers Valiant : Rai.

Quant à Robert Venditti, l’auteur qui a relancé X-O Manowar et écrit ses aventures pendant quatre ans, tout ce qu’on peut dire c’est qu’il travaille encore sur la série Wrath of the Eternal Warrior avec les dessinateurs Raul Allen et Robert Gill.

La nouvelle série X-O Manowar a souvent été décrite comme « Conan dans l’espace » lors de la relance de 2012 mais il faut avouer que le trait de Tomas Giorello ramène forcément au Roi Conan (dont il a dessiné plusieurs mini-séries en plus de participer à la série Conan).

Je n’ai pas trop cette sensation, mais je n’ai lu que la Vf, cela ce développe surement après.

Il n’aura pas fallu attendre longtemps pour que X-O Manowar, le premier héros relancé par Valiant Entertainment, sorte de la naphtaline après l’arrêt de sa série précédente. Et ce ne sera pas pour jouer aux cartes comme le prouve ce teaser illustré Monika Palosz et annonçant une nouvelle série pour mars 2017.

Si on devait mettre notre petit billet sur un auteur, on parierait sur le scénariste Matt Kindt (4001 A.D., Ninjak, Divinity) puisqu’il s’était occupé, avec le dessinateur Tomas Giorello, du prologue concluant X-O Manowar #50.

On y voyait un Eric Dacia usé, siégeant sur un trône de cadavres sur une planète extra-terrestre.

S’il ne révolutionne rien en soi, Valiant ose quand même impacter ses personnages et les faire souffrir - au propre comme au figuré.

C’est maintenant officiel, le scénariste Matt Kindt et le dessinateur Tomas Giorello relanceront ce que Valiant Entertainement annonce déjà comme la série la plus importante jamais publiée chez eux : X-O Manowar.

Tellement importante que l’éditeur a révélé le programme complet de cette histoire que développera l’auteur sur un an, les noms des arcs et des dessinateurs impliqués compris :

Comme annoncé ci-dessus, Giorello ouvre le bal pour le premier arc en trois numéros intitulé Soldat. Vient ensuite Général à partir de juin 2017, sous le crayon de Doug Braithwaite. Clayton Crain prend la suite dès X-O Manowar #7 avec la première partie de Empereur en septembre. En décembre 2017, Ryan Bodenheim s’occupe d’un court Interlude, puis Mico Suayan viendra conclure avec le dernier arc nommé Visigoth.
