Marvel Comics lève le voile sur la destinée de l’univers Ultimate post-Cataclysm. La nouvelle ligne consistera en trois nouveaux titres lancés en avril sous la bannière Ultimate Marvel Now: « Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider-Man » par Brian Bendis et David Marquez, « Ultimate FF » par Joshua Hale Fialkov et Mario Guevara et « All-New Ultimates » par Michel Fiffe et Amilcar Pinna.
La grosse surprise de cette relance, c’est l’arrivée de l’autodidacte **Michel Fiffe **au sein de Marvel Comics. Habituellement scénariste, dessinateur, coloriste et éditeur de ses œuvres (Copra), ce fan de « Suicide Squad » aura la lourde tache de relancer « All-New Ultimates » avec le dessinateur Amilcar Pinna. La jeune équipe comprendra Miles Morales, Kitty Pryde, Bombshell, Cloak & Dagger et Black Widow.
A noter que c’est la première fois, de mémoire, que le scénariste Brian Bendis partage l’Ultimate Spider-Man sur le long terme depuis sa création il y a 14 ans. Ci-dessous, la couverture du premier numéro par David Marquez:
J’ai découvert récemment Copra, et donc le boulot de Fiffe. Et c’est très étonnant. OK, c’est une fan-fiction déguisée de Suicide Squad, où les personnages changent légèrement de nom (Floyd devient Lloyd…), mais c’est particulièrement bien raconté. Fiffe dessine dans un style faussement naïf, qui me fait penser parfois à Lemire, parfois à David Lapham, parfois à la « nouvelle BD » franco-belge, mais il a un storytelling vraiment compétent et vigoureux.
Je suis à la fois content et curieux de le voir arriver chez l’un des deux gros. Après, j’aimerais bien qu’il fasse un truc avec son style à lui, à la « Marvel Knight » récent.
Ce que j’aime bien chez Michel Fiffe c’est l’économie. L’économie sur le fond (des personnages archétypaux, contrefaits même) et sur la forme (une ligne claire, narration en gaufrier, instinctive, comme un premier jet poussé). Il n’y a pas d’esbrouffre dans ce qu’il fait. Cette économie vient probablement des influences qu’il recycle (Ditko et John Ostrander bien entendu, mais aussi Jim Steranko et Richard Case) mais on peut aussi se demander si elle ne s’explique pas par le fait qu’il travaille entièrement seul, et qu’il doit autant aimer concevoir ses comics que de les voir distribués.
Je suis plutôt content qu’il sorte de sa zone de confiance avec « All-New Ultimates ». Il est bon dans ce qu’il fait, j’aimerai bien savoir si il est aussi bon pour le reste. Cependant, je dois avouer qu’un projet « Docteur Strange »* réalisé par ses soins ne me déplairait pas.
Avec « All-New Ultimates », j’espère seulement qu’il s’occupera lui-même des petits effets géométriques dont il est si friand dans « Copra ».

Déniché un peu par hasard, j’ai même cru (les couvertures ne donnant guère d’information) qu’il s’agissait d’une création étrangère, en regardant des visuels, genre espagnole ou italienne. Je suis d’ailleurs davantage séduit par l’énergie et la grande lisibilité du style de Fiffe que par le contenu même.
Mais je suis bien curieux d’avoir ton avis, tiens.

They’re over the « beginner’s luck » phase of their shelf life. They have to work at being a team and work harder at not getting killed. So the first arc is them taking a few bumps but committing to their heroic ideal no matter how painful and tragic it can get. The big climax will come in the form of issues #5 and 6. That will be a turning point for them.
