I basically wanted to match the two great myths of Nevada together; this is the story about Las Vegas and Area 51. These are the two great myths of Nevada. That’s what the story is about. You’ll see it with all the colors, you’ve got this kind of retro stuff. I introduce, basically, a Marvel version of the Greys [the iconic aliens associated with Area 51]. They’re very, very, different than any version of the Greys that anyone has anyone seen.

Dale Eaglesham made up the Stark Seven, who Howard Stark goes to [for] help with the heist. These are a mixture of old characters and new characters. The Seven are Jimmy Woo, Thunderbolt Ross—these are all younger versions of the characters. Rollo the alien. The Bear, who I see as Holly Hunter in 1960’s dress complete with big old sunglasses. And Nessa, who is the card shark. The splash page of the team is very cool. You’re talking about the joy of doing a period insert piece, you get to play with that kind of imagery. It’s a gang that looks appealing to people.

We have people like Dum Dum Dugan, Jimmy Woo and Thunderbolt Ross. Since this is a heist story where they try to rescue a certain thing, Howard gets a team together. So I started thinking about people who could be useful in that period of time. I considered using a younger Peggy Carter too, but I wanted to introduce some new characters as well.

The response is pretty much what I expected. The people who hate it are responding exactly as they should — in fact, they’re having Tony’s response to the revelations, which is kind of my point. The people who like it are buying into the, « Actually, that does explain a lot of things » aspect of the story. I think it’s strong. I think even people who dislike the idea initially are going to be talked around to what we’re doing by the time we reach its epilogue in issue #17. I think what I do only helps Tony as a character, even as it fundamentally alters his position in the universe forever. It’s a big, existential sort of story.

Pour son prochain arc sur la série Iron Man, Kieron Gillen annonce Iron Metropolis en collaboration avec le nouveau dessinateur régulier Joe Bennett. Le scénariste s’est inspiré d’une accroche de son ami designer Matt Jones qui déclare que « la ville est une armure de guerre pour survivre au futur. »

De retour de l’espace où il a appris que le Robot 451 l’avait amélioré génétiquement in-utero pour aider la Terre à s’armer contre les menaces cosmiques, le vengeur doré retrouve son costard-cravate à Résistance pour bâtir la ville du futur sur les cendres de Mandarin City. Mais l’ombre du super-vilain guette…

The characters that I write tend to be smarter than I am. The one advantage that you have as a writer is time. Most of these people are making plans in split-seconds, especially as we are getting towards the end. Things are kind of improvised. It’s improvised for them and I have weeks to think about it. As long as I am consistent and obsessive in my thinking, I can make a story-based facsimile, or enough to be convincing. Does that make sense? It’s not like an improv session of trying to be smart. That’s much harder. The idea is that you sit back and think about what could work or what they could possibly think of. It’s a good question and it comes down to use of time. It’s like they have extremely powerful computers and I have a weak computer. My computer just takes a while longer to do the math.

Bon, j’y pense depuis quelques mois, et je le dis avant la parution du numéro en question: il est fort probable que Tony Stark a un grand frère du même nom. Il s’agirait de celui modifié génétiquement in-utero par le robot 451, expliquant ainsi pourquoi l’armure Godkiller n’a pas fonctionné avec le Vengeur Doré.
Je peux me tromper, mais ça devrait se vérifier rapidement avec la sortie de Iron Man #17.
