Ah ouais, bien sûr, t’as raison.

JUSTICE LEAGUE 3000 #9
Written by J.M. DeMatteis and Keith Giffen
Illustrated by Howard Porter
It‘s the event you’ve been waiting for: the Five face the force of a united Justice League. Meanwhile, Ariel Masters, the “mother” of the JL, makes a critical decision about the team’s future.

You know, with DeMatteis and I, when we write a team like the Justice League, we’re not interested in what they are. We’re not interested in the Flash or Green Lantern, or Superman or Batman — that’s what they are.
We’re interested in who they are.
Right now, our Justice League consists of:
Superman, who is finding himself helplessly attracted to Teri, the new Flash;
we’ve got Batman;
we’ve got Wonder Woman, and we’ll find out exactly how psychotic she is pretty soon;
we’ve got a female Flash who doesn’t know how to use her powers;
we’ve got a six-inch Green Lantern who rides around in a pocket in his cloak;
and now we’ve got two knuckleheads from the 20th Century coming in, as Blue Beetle and Booster Gold join the book.
They all are headquartered on a planet where the cast of Camelot 3000 hangs out — their headquarters are the castle in Camelot 3000.
And Camelot 3000 is currently at war with Etrigan’s demon empire.
And by the way, I don’t know if the fans are waiting for us to re-grow Green Lantern. But I can’t make any promises. As far as I’m concerned right now, he’s staying six inches tall.
Giffen: Yes, he’s an extraordinarily nice guy. And his art is just …. considering his career was considered to be over by most people. « Oh, he hurt his hand! » and all that. Talk about roaring back! It’s funny, half of the fans out there claim that they know comics, but I think most of them don’t know that Howard had that hand injury. I know for a fact, most of the fans don’t know I died three years ago.
Nrama: Wait, what? You didn’t tell fans that your heart stopped, Keith!
Giffen: Why should I?
Nrama: It would explain some of the creative shuffling that was done a couple years ago. Is this on the record now?
Giffen: Yep, you can put that on the record. « Keith Giffen: Back from the dead! » My concern back then – and DC was good about this; nobody leaked it. Dan DiDio knew; DC knew. Nobody said a word. I didn’t want to be — and you know the fans will do this — if this leaked out or I announced it, there would be about five minutes of heat and then people would forget it, but I was concerned that my work would be judged on Keith before, and Keith after. I’ve got a nice body of work now, so I think people can see, yeah, he’s still doing s**t. [Laughs.] I didn’t want to give anybody a reason to say, hmmm, he’s not the same guy. I mean, in a way, I’m not. But I think it’s in a good way.

We weren’t constantly being yanked into a special event every two minutes. That’s why I’m glad I’m 1000 years in the future [in « Justice League 3000 »]. « What are you going to do five years later? » « Screw you, I’m 1000 years later! » We had more room – let’s put it that way.
Don’t get me wrong, they still hammered us – « Take the humor out, it’ll be a better book! » was a cry throughout our tenure on « Justice League. » But there was a tolerance that I think has been – not completely lost, but it’s not as prevalent as it used to be. You had to fight really hard to get a book with a different tenor out there. I’m looking at some of the books coming out right now and I’m very heartened by what I see. « Silver Surfer » – Mike Allred drawing « Silver Surfer »? I never thought I’d see the day, but boy is that a nice book. It’s a charming little book. The way they’ve redone « Batgirl » – and my current favorite comic book, « Gotham Academy. » Becky Cloonan should be the most sought-after writer in the business. That is such a wonderful book! Never mind if it’s for girls or guys or whatever, it’s just a good book. It’s full of interesting characters that made me want to know more.
There’s a loosening up, and this is kind of current, at both companies in terms of what each company considers a comic, which is a ridiculous thing to say, because a comic is basically what sells. That’s a good comic. Dick Giordano hated, hated, hated Lobo – hated the character, hated the book – hated him. But he understood that Lobo was a popular character, not his cup of tea, so he wasn’t constantly after me to change and conform to his way.

Right. It’s always interesting to me that when we came back to do Formerly Known as the Justice League, we hadn’t worked together in something like ten years. It was a little scary to sit down and work on these characters again. And then suddenly, they each open their big mouths and won’t shut up.
It’s the same thing with the next issue of Justice League 3000 (#12). It’s basically a Beetle and Booster solo story, where they wake up in the future. There’s always this moment of wondering whether it’s going to work, but then they start talking and it’s off we go! And it’s the same feeling as when you get together with an old friend that you haven’t seen in 10 or 15 years, and you pick up right where you left off.
In a way, Beetle and Booster are our eyes. They’ll be the ones who are commenting on the future, like “You mean most of the clothes are holographic?” They’ll be the ones we can use to get across certain concepts, because the other characters understand the 30th century. They can teleport. It’s normal to them. At least with Beetle and Booster, we can get a sense of awe for the technology.
