MARVEL (Général)

Chip Zdarsky gave a long interview about his new phase at Marvel, and I found the conversation extremely interesting. Here are some points that really caught my attention:

  • When Joshua Williamson took over the Iron Man comic, he called Chip to find out which book he should be reading to understand the current status and where the Marvel Universe is heading. And the answer was: there isn’t one. X-Men, Spider-Man, Avengers, Hulk, Thor — everything feels very isolated. There’s no integration.

And his idea is to bring back a bit of the spirit that Brian Michael Bendis and Jonathan Hickman brought to Marvel in the last decades, making the Captain America book and the upcoming Armageddon saga the stories that everyone needs to read to understand where the Marvel Universe is going.

  • Chip is taking on a creative leadership role at Marvel for the next few years. In the past we had the “architects,” and he will be something close to that. With Jonathan Hickman by his side.

  • In February there will be the big Marvel creative retreat, to align everything and map out the plans for the next year.

  • That this second stint at Marvel is different for him, because now he’s the veteran on the team. That now there are many new faces at the publisher, and among the people he already knew and had worked with before, there’s only Hickman and Gerry Duggan. The rest is new blood.

  • Zdarsky also talked about the success of the Absolute line and made a comment that I think is very important: “I think it’s a great sign, for everyone, because they’re books that prioritize the creator, in most cases.” And he commented that this challenges a very common belief within the Marvel/DC system that it’s not the creators who sell, but the characters.

Grands runs tu voulais dire ?
