Pour mille raisons (le caractère naturel d’un personnage en tenue civile, l’encrage très classique, très inspiré de Keith Williams dans la lignée des dessinateurs de strips, la bulle de pensée qui caractérise un héros pas sûr de lui, le décor banal mais aussi très vivant…), cette toute première page de Capullo, en ouverture de Quasar #18, m’a bien impressionné à l’époque.
Typiquement le genre de boulot prometteur (mais parfois, les jeunes dessinateurs ne tiennent pas leurs promesses : l’évolution rapide de Capullo, qui l’a mené où l’on sait, est assez exceptionnelle) qui donne envie de suivre les épisodes suivants. Et quelle évolution, déjà, dans cette première prestation régulière…

Je suis passé à côté. Tenté plusieurs de m y mettre pour abandonner au bout de trois quatre épisodes.
J’ai envie de me laisser tenter par certains Modern Epic mais le prix… Ouch !
La faute à Portacio (lors des numéros tie-in à Fear Itself) ?
Qui ont de plus en plus l’air d’être les remplaçants des complete collection (tout comme les premiers epic collection ayant supplanté les essentials et autres visionaries).
Je ne crois pas. Pas de souvenir.
Je me suis replongé dans mon troisième tome Essential consacré au Punisher. Plein d’histoires que j’avais lues dans le désordre, quelques-unes que je ne connaissais pas…
Le sommaire commence avec les épisodes d’Erik Larsen, qui se montre très généreux en trognes virils, en fusillades et en perspectives forcées. C’est plutôt pas mal, et on sent le dessinateur se transformer (le #25 annonce ce qu’on verra sur Amazing Spider-Man, mais aussi sur Savage Dragon). Ça pulse, il a une chouette méchante et l’encrage de Scott Williams lui réussit pas mal.
Le sommaire nous permet aussi de goûter deux Annuals, le deuxième, connecté au cross-over Atlantis Attacks et construit en team-up avec Moon Knight, et le troisième, relié au cross-over Lifeform. Autre cross-over, Acts of Vengeance, qui marque la rencontre avec Doctor Doom. La série est un peu plongée de force dans la mouvance Marvel, ça marche parfois, et parfois moins. En tout cas, le personnage n’est pas en solo hors-continuité, c’est clair.
Ce cross-over, c’est aussi le remplacement de Carl Potts par Don Daley au poste de responsable éditorial du titre. On le sent un peu passer. D’une part, l’excellent lettreur Ken Bruzenak (complice de Chaykin), qui avait livré de formidables pages titres jusque-là, s’en va aussi. D’autre part, la série semble marquer le pas, avec quelques histoires courtes aux envergures moindres. Mais ceux qui veulent voir le personnage flinguer du criminel (de tous ordres : d’ailleurs, difficile de savoir si la série se veut conservatrice ou progressiste à la seule aune des méchants, même si elle est teintée d’une méfiance envers le marginal et la figure d’autorité qui rangerait facilement les intrigues à droite) seront ravis.
Le sommaire se conclut sur la saga « Jigsaw Puzzle », qui voit le retour d’un adversaire de longue date. Il s’agit en l’occurrence d’une épopée estivale dont les chapitres sont publiés à un rythme bimensuel, traitement par lequel sont passées des séries comme Amazing Spider-Man, Uncanny X-Men, Captain America et sans doute d’autres que j’oublie.
Pour tenir le rythme, les illustrateurs se relaient. On trouve un Texeira très inspiré pour un épisode qui semble avoir lieu dans les décors de New York ne répond plus, avec des immeubles abandonnés transformés en forteresses. On y sent un Frank Castle ambivalent, à la fois planificateur minutieux et fonceur suicidaire, dans une caractérisation loin d’être monobloc.
La saga est à l’image du travail de Baron : documenté, à volonté réaliste (à l’exemple des toutes premières intrigues du titre s’inspirant de l’actualité d’alors), il mélange sans vergogne des choses plus rocambolesques et hautes en couleur. Par exemple, si la saga de l’été commence dans une ambiance de guerilla urbaine, elle se conclut avec la révélation du maître du gourou qu’affronte le Punisher, le démon Belasco. Mike Baron joue les contrastes.
Dans l’ensemble, c’est une série qui propose de nombreuses surprises et une évidente variété de ton, sous couvert d’une ambiance musclée et testostéronée. Potts puis Daley font aussi venir des auteurs depuis l’écurie First : Baron en est l’exemple, mais il est ici souvent associé à Bill Reinhold, complice du scénariste sur Badger, par exemple. La reproduction, noir et blanc sur papier cheap, demeure pas mal du tout : c’est sensible dans les deux épisodes dessinés par Russ Heath, suspense de sous-marin où le sens du détail réaliste du dessinateur est très bien restitué par l’impression.

AH oui le départ de Potts, oui les intrigues sont un peu moins bonnes. Ceci je trouve que la durée du duo Baron/Reinhold tient bien. Je le redis mais je comprend smal que marvel et DC n aient pas trouvé plus de boulot à ce dessinateur certes classique mais efficace.
Je feuilletais le dernier travail qu il a fait avec baron sur un GN Punisher (Punisher-Empty Quarters en 1994 alors que baron et Reinhold me semblent avoit disparu de marvel en 1993) qui nous ramene un autre ennemi Saracen qui hantera les histoires de Baron sur le personnage dans tous les titres…
On dirait d ailleurs que les titres Punisher sont un peu géré comme ceux de batman… on sait pas bien qui est l equipe en charge d un titre tant cela tourne et qu on retrouve Baron, Diwon puis DNA ou Grant un peu sur tous les titres…
Mais de memoire j aime bien cette periode… le acts of vengeance est un moment faible de la periode (contrairement à Punisher War Journal où la rencontre avec Bushwacker a une vraie résonance)
C est vrai que l apparition de Belasco est bizarre mais j ai trouvé l arc sympa.
