Morrison aurait dû être le propriétaire de la série ?

2000AD fonctionne sur le modèle du work for hire. Mais concernant Zenith, Grant Morrison affirme depuis plusieurs années que l’éditeur n’a aucun document prouvant qu’il serait détenteur des droits sur la série, et c’est ce qui est à la base de l’imbroglio juridique qui a bloqué toute réédition de la série depuis longtemps, Morrison voulant que la situation soit clarifiée autour des droits. C’est plus le fait que Rebellion se présente comme propriétaire de la série qui va relancer une pièce dans la machine, chose d’ailleurs déjà enclenchée depuis quelques temps:

Justement je trouve également dommage de ne pas avoir un échantillon de ce qui va être proposé, je parle en terme d’impression.

J’ai récupéré mon exemplaire et pour le peu que j’en ai parcouru, l’impression me semble d’excellente qualité. Comme les débuts datent de la deuxième moitié des années 1980, j’imagine qu’il y a eu un travail de numérisation important (soit du matériel disponible en films, soit des numéros de 2000AD qui ont vu la prépublication de la série) et ça m’a l’air très propre: plus des trois quarts des pages de l’album sont en noir et blanc, mais pas de pixellisation ou de flou sur les contours des personnages dans les planches (comme on pouvait en voir sur l’édition française de Savage Dragon chez Delcourt), pas de traces d’encre qui aurait bavé. Je redécouvre d’ailleurs le travail de Steve Yeowell, que je connaissais essentiellement pour sa participation aux Invisibles du même scénariste, et qui a une très belle maîtrise du noir et blanc.

Face au succès de l’édition limitée, 2000AD rééditera l’intégrale de la série Zenith de Grant Morrison et Steve Yeowell sous la forme de quatre volumes dont le premier paraitra en octobre (et le deuxième en décembre).

I’d have preferred if they’d left Zenith alone, but they can’t help themselves. Due to their own administrative error, I didn’t sign away my rights to the series, but they’ve been unwilling to acknowledge my position or offer me even a minimal cut while doing everything they can to sneak Zenith stuff in behind my back. If they’d been smarter, I might have come back for a new Zenith story. I’m sure Rob Williams will do a decent job and I have no beef with him, but I find the whole thing a bit distasteful and prefer to have nothing to do with it…. There are legal issues with Zenith that make any return unlikely.

Yep. C’est pour ça qu’on a jamais eu la suite et qu’Urban à laissé coulé les droits.
