J ai le souvenir que tu avais un bon souvenir de cette periode là.

La fin de la période Pollina avec le côté road trip est excellente.

Voilà qui me rassure sur ma mémoire.

Ouais y avait quelques idées sympas mais qui en grande majorité ont déboucher sur pas grand chose

A part des cross je n ai lu xforce qu avec milligan

Loeb etait venu à bout de mon interet pour la série.

Je venais de commencer les comics le style de Pollina m’a scotché direct. Deux ou trois ans après, j’ai bossé pour un petit comic shop sur Amiens pendant les vacances et je le suivais sur les festivals et autres braderies. La boutique à fermée un an ou deux après, elle était dans une petite rue, pour la trouver fallait connaître. Bref il roulait pas sûr l’or, du coup j’étais pas déclaré et payé en marchandise. C’est comme ça que j’ai eu mes premières planches originale. Et la première à été bien entendu du Pollina sur X-Force. ( cf thread vos planches)

Je viens de recevoir le recueil cartonné Avengers : West Coast Avengers - Lost in Space-Time, qui rassemble les épisodes 17 à 24 de la série West Coast Avengers écrite par Steve Englehart au milieu des années 1980. Cet arc est sans doute pour moi l’un des sommets de la série, qui contient quand même quelques belles pépites.

Au moment où débute l’action, le groupe semble enfin fonctionner de manière fluide, malgré les fortes personnalités de ses membres. Mais une ombre se profile, puisque Henry Pym se sent assez exclu. Et Englehart est bien décidé à ne pas ménager ses personnages, puisqu’il décrit un scientifique dépressif, au bord du suicide, sauvé in extremis par La Espirita, nouvelle incarnation de Firebird.

L’audace du scénariste, sans doute soutenu par l’éditorial qui tient à ce que les auteurs aillent au bout de leurs idées, est étonnante : évoquer la dépression et le suicide dans un comic book mainstream de super-héros classique, c’est surprenant.

Non content de faire le portrait d’un héros dont le moral s’effrite et qui se reconstruit dans ce qu’on appellerait aujourd’hui « un nouveau projet de vie », Englehart lance les autres héros dans un récit endiablé. Piégée par Dominus, l’équipe est renvoyée dans le passé à l’aide d’une machine temporelle coincée en direction du passé : c’est le début d’une saga temporelle qui permettra au scénariste amoureux de la continuité d’opposer les super-héros modernes à leurs ancêtres (notamment dans le monde des cow-boys exploité par Atlas Comics dans les années 1950 et 1960) et de les faire croiser d’autres voyageurs temporels.

L’astuce est ingénieuse (et sera reprise par Jean-Marc Lofficier et Luciano Bernasconi pour leur cycle tout à fait recommandable de Wampus, où l’agent cosmique du chaos est lui aussi condamné à un voyage vers le passé), et les récits de voyages, sous une forme ou une autre, fonctionnent toujours à merveille (on se souviendra du lent voyage de retour des X-Men sous Claremont et Byrne, où les mutants quittent la base de Magneto, passent par la Terre Sauvage, le Japon et le Canada avant de retrouver leurs pénates, mais également aux épisodes de Fantastic Four par Englehart là encore où le quatuor explore plusieurs mondes avant d’assister à « Secret Wars III »). Mais plutôt que de continuer le périple temporel, Englehart le complexifie, quand le Night Rider / Ghost Rider de l’époque enlève Mockingbird, séparant encore plus le groupe.

Ainsi, l’action se démultiplie, chaque page d’introduction de l’épisode étant découpée en autant de cases qu’il faut suivre d’intrigues à des périodes différentes.

Il y a une dimension bien évidemment ludique à cette écriture, Englehart s’amusant visiblement à maltraiter ses protagonistes tout en faisant référence à des voyages temporels précédents, l’un par les Fantastiques chez Rama-Tut, et les deux autres par Doctor Strange (l’un de ses périples correspondant à la fin de ses propres épisodes). Mais au-delà de ça, c’est aussi l’occasion d’avoir une vision plus riches des héros, notamment du couple Hawkeye / Mockingbird, de marquer le retour d’un héros et l’arrivée d’un nouvel allié (le surgissement de Moon Knight, s’il fait totalement sens dans le récit, arrive-t-il en remplacement de la première idée d’Englehart, à savoir intégrer Daredevil au groupe ?), de montrer l’affrontement entre deux versions de Rama-Tut et d’offrir un récit haletant, plein de rebondissement. Vraiment, cette saga a tout.

Le lecteur suit d’un côté le périple des héros vers le passé (et l’Égypte de Rama-Tut où ils espèrent trouver une machine en état de marche afin de faire le chemin inverse), et de l’autre le parcours d’un mot écrit par Hawkeye dans le passé et destiné à leurs amis du présent. Les deux fils narratifs enrichissent le suspense et maintiennent l’attention.

Et Al Milgrom, dessinateur attitré de la série, dont les limites graphiques sont rapidement atteintes, semble très motivé de son côté et livre des planches très convaincantes. Bref, un très chouette moment dans l’histoire du groupe.

Le recueil contient également deux épisodes de complément, les deux aventures auxquelles l’intrigue d’Englehart fait référence, à savoir Fantastic Four #19 et Doctor Strange #53, numéro doublement mémorable car il marque le départ de Cléa et le début de la dépression du Sorcier Suprême. Notons que le second est un hommage au premier, et donc qu’Englehart s’inscrit dans une tradition qui tient tout autant du jeu de poupées russes.
